Why Are Laptops More Expensive Than Desktops?

If You have any queries about why are laptops more expensive than desktops,  you are at the right place.

In this article, I am explaining every single reason. I explain the difference of every single component in detail also. Let’s jump to the topic.

Which is better: laptop or desktop?

Weighing the PC against the laptop is an old-world debate. Why? The choice of one over the other has become even harder than the previous. Finding the right option for a newbie is difficult with so many choices.

Both devices are worse than each other, and both have their advantages and disadvantages. To help you determine which side of the laptop vs PC divide you need to be on, we will show you various points to consider, including all the pros and cons so that anyone can compare.

Why are laptops more expensive than desktops?

Why Are Laptops More Expensive Than Desktops?

The solid reason behind the cost is manufacturing expenditure. The manufacturing of significant components costs less than smaller components similar productively as both have identical performance. That’s why laptops are more expensive than desktops.

This is not just productivity; it’s a massive challenge for every component. Here I discuss the main parts of these machines.

While both types of computers depend on semiconductors to function correctly, the number of similarities begins to vanish as you take a closer look at their internal construction.

It’s not only the imposition that is a  challenge for manufacturing. It also keeps the system cool enough to maintain stability under most daily operating conditions.

Differences in each part affect the price. Here’s an essential list of the main components that make a difference in their cost, along with an explanation of why that might be.

Motherboard

Motherboard

All the parts of laptop or computer desktops working depend upon the motherboard because it contains the command centre of these devices like the skull in animals which covers the brain and its components.

The size of the laptop’s components can contribute to its price being higher than that of desktops.

To make a laptop as lightweight as possible, you need to accommodate more motherboard components into less space than a full-size desktop motherboard. With a mini motherboard, further design problems have to be overcome. Here are some examples:

  1. Smallest component footprint – Components should be selected that best fit their size.
  2. Additional sophistication in track design – Since several components are interconnected on a smaller motherboard, circuit paths must be designed with very few gaps.
  3. Design- The design of the components must be taken into account so that factors such as protection, performance, and heat are not an issue.

Processor

Processor
The central processing units(CPU) we use in laptops and desktops are called processors. They work in a very different way when it comes to power consumption in these devices.

This is where an additional cost in development would come from. Who should pay particular attention to obtaining adequate levels of performance with as little energy as possible? The laptop processors do so; they perform similar functions with as little as possible energy consumption.

Power management features are essential and add extra development costs to get a good outcome. It’s not that often anymore that you see a CPU socket on a laptop motherboard. Processors are usually soldered directly to the motherboard using a BGA (Ball Grid Array) to save space.

The solder pads on the motherboard and the processor are connected by small solder balls that are heated and melted to connect the places.

With this in mind, processors must be designed to withstand certain temperatures for the welding process to succeed.

Graphics processing

Graphics processing

When it comes to high-quality visuals, then the graphic plays its role. We mainly observe that gaming and Crypto mining devices need quality graphic processor units because the graphic processor is responsible for showing high-quality (HD) visuals on the screen.

There are two paths to execute the GPU in a laptop.

Integrated graphics card:

The graphics processor is integrated with the processor. A semiconductor package performs both tasks.

Dedicated Graphics

A dedicated GPU is soldered to the motherboard, providing better performance for graphics-intensive operations such as gaming.

With a dedicated GPU on the motherboard, additional development is required to fit and cool the extra semiconductor package into a small motherboard. This increases the costs, and therefore you pay more for a laptop with a dedicated graphics card.

RAM

RAM

RAM (Random Access Memory) is one of the exceptions when it comes to pricing. Laptops typically use SODIMM RAM instead of DIMM memory used in desktop computers.

Whether we work on a laptop or desktop simultaneously, we use its temporary memory, Random Access Memory.

Although SODIMMs are more minor than desktop RAM, it doesn’t seem to affect the price negatively. This is probably due to the high demand for memory around the world. The arrival of cloud storage and smartphones in our life are practical examples.

Cooling system

Cooling system

A laptop computer’s cooling system should be designed to remain compact and maintain its cooling efficiency. It is a challenge, and it is one of the essential elements for the system’s durability.

Proper functioning under challenging circumstances needs a high-quality cooling system which adds an extra price.

The design of an efficient heat sink and a sufficiently compact fan not only comes at an extra cost, but they often include heat pipes that are sealed under partial vacuum and contain an internal wick and fluid.

This adds an extra layer of complexity to the heat sink and materials, increasing manufacturing costs.

Disks

Disks

The central memory of laptops and desktops is known as this disc. That’s the place where every software is to be installed. Everything we download will stay there and last until we delete it permanently.

Modern laptops have changed to use an M.2 SSD as the primary drive. An SSD does not suffer from the flaws of mechanical movements and offers exceptional performance. We’ll talk more about SSDs and whether they’re worth it.

Hard drives for smaller and more compact laptops (2.5in vs 3.5in for desktops). They also have lower storage capacity, lower performance and slightly more expensive than a desktop hard drive of the same size and specifications.

Battery Power

Battery Power

This is a component that is not present on a desktop computer. The closest thing that could look like a desktop machine is a UPS (uninterruptible power supply).

This is accountable for giving power to the laptop when it is not attached to the power cables. This system maintains the power supply until the battery is finished.

A UPS is a unit with a battery inside that plugs in separately from the mains, and that allows your computer to run long enough to store and safely shut down all your work.

For a laptop, however, the battery can do more than that. You can use the entire notebook for several hours at a time with additional peripherals plugged in without plugging it into the charger.

This is something that adds extra expenditure to build a laptop. While it’s not something expensive, it still adds to the end price.

A laptop should be designed to protect the battery from physical damage to some degree and be as cool as possible.

So an extra component of the laptop design is meant to do just that with the battery. When adding a battery to a product, there are other things to consider, such as a reasonable number of amp hours to allow the laptop to run for a desired amount of time before it runs out of power.

Screen

Screen

Laptops have beautiful displays with the most advanced and top-notch graphics features. Some of them even have sensitive touch screens these days of 2022 if you have a desktop.

Bring it here and compare your screen to your high-quality laptop screen. You could see the difference in why laptops are so expensive than desktops. Yes, why not, because the laptop screen is something away from the desktop.

Finally, one self-evident reason, but you would be surprised how often people forget about this little problem. All laptops have a built-in screen. They should; otherwise, they wouldn’t be great laptops.

On a desktop computer, however, there is no screen. Sure, you can find bundles that come with an LCD monitor, but these monitors often don’t compare to the high-quality screens on most laptops today.

A good screen can add $100 or more to the purchase of a new computer. If you already have one, you may not have to worry about it, but if you’re going with a laptop, remember that you get a new screen with your purchase.

It’s all part of the package. This small factor can often make a significant price difference. Many companies make laptops with higher capability and battery life, while desktop computers do not have these things and can only be used with an electricity source.

This is why it costs more for laptops because they offer these efficient and long-lasting batteries in laptops, making them more expensive units than desktops.

Power Supply

Power Supply

When we move to the power supply of laptop and desktop, the computer never needs a permanent power connection; that’s why laptops are portable, and you can use them anywhere you want. The laptop has two power sources: electricity and its battery.

When we moved to the desktop’s power supply, the power supply of the stop was a brand of cables and a converter device that converted the AC voltage to DC.

Desktop requires an AC power cable to work. Desktop is not portable anywhere you want. You are restricted to one place to work on a desktop.

Pointing Device

Pointing Device

When it comes to the pointing device, then a significant difference is waiting for us. In laptops, the most common pointing device is the touchpad. The touchpad is easier to use, and it is fixed. It has a lot of shortcuts.

In the case of the desktop, the Most common pointing device is the mouse. It is used with a USB port/Wireless mouse.  This causes the addition of space required for the desktop.

Interface Hardware included

When you buy a desktop, you usually only get one box unless you go for one of those bundle deals that come with keyboards and mice. But a laptop, on the other hand, comes with a touchpad and keyboard built into the system.

When purchasing a desktop computer, consider these additional costs if you want to compare the price of your desktop to laptops.

How much do you end up saving if you have to update your keyboard and mouse simultaneously? The savings you make on the first purchase of a new machine won’t mean much after you buy all those extra peripherals for your desktop.

Think about it; most desktops don’t come with a keyboard, mouse, or other extras like a webcam. All of these must be purchased to get the same functionality from your desktop as your current laptop.

Advantages of Laptops

Since laptops have been updated a lot, that doesn’t mean desktops aren’t worth keeping yet.

All the great benefits that a laptop gives you are one of the main reasons laptops are as popular today. People love the convenience of being able to take their computers with them wherever they go.

They want to be able to work and play from cars, airports and even in the park. Whatever the task, people love the freedom that a laptop brings. All you need to do is make sure you have enough battery power to last you while you work.

But some key benefits that only come with laptops can clarify their importance and tell you why they’re more expensive than the same durable desktop that runs on electricity. So let’s take a look at these factors.

Portability and Compactness:

Before you know it, tell me which will be better? Using a laptop anywhere, such as on the bus, airline, or hotel store, or just staying at home with a group of relatives or in a separate room? Of course! You know the difference and also which would be better.

This is why the laptop has adopted permanent portability and compatibility with some of the latest and most advanced features.

Laptops come with the latest and smallest hardware making them light, easy to carry and small units so you can get any job done anytime, anywhere that a well-developed desktop computer can only do at home, in the office or a specific room.

Therefore, portability is the most common and crucial factor in why laptops are more expensive than desktops.

Cable clutter and energy efficiency:

Laptops don’t require permanently attached power cords, so they can keep working. Yes, you can consider this and compare it with the desktop because many cables always surround it. In addition, laptops consume less power than desktops.

Because a durable and versatile laptop with a budget of $1,000 to $1,200 only needs to be billed once and can stay with you for a very reasonable amount of time. But even if you spent that money or half to buy the same desk, you still have to plug it in when you use it.

What could be better if you want to choose between a desktop and a laptop?

Well, the choice is yours, just as the money you spend is yours. But what could be better? Look, my friend, if you’ve been sitting in a chair all your life at home, then you should go for a desktop computer and also if the budget is a bit tight.

However, if life keeps you busy and you don’t want to sit around exploring, you want to have a device with you wherever you want. Therefore, a laptop is the best option to do most of your work, play games, listen to music, or watch a movie, anytime, anywhere.

As for my recommendations, I would ask you to pick a laptop if you choose between the two. However, your desktop computer can be just as powerful, even with little money, like the money you will spend on a laptop.

With all the above advantages that a laptop can offer, this is a good choice. But if you like both of them, you have a passion for both, and your budget allows it, then you can have both.

Conclusion

There you have it, all the major individual components and why they cost more in a laptop. So the next time you see laptops in your favourite store, think about all the additional development and manufacturing costs involved in delivering all that performance in a small package.

In a nutshell, I also want to add that laptops are portable. It’s easy to use a computer wherever we want, but desktops need particular space for their use. Desktops have a lot of cables with them.

But the laptop has only one charging cable, which is the need for charging the battery. Now you know why are laptops more expensive than desktops. It seems like desktops will vanish in future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes.

For many years, laptops were cheaper than PCs, but this is no longer the case; we’ve found that new laptops cost more than PCs on average. Therefore, laptops are more expensive than PCs.

Why do laptops last longer than desktops?

Laptops last longer than desktops because laptops are inherently more power-efficient. A laptop gets power from a battery, whereas a desktop gets it plugged into an outlet. The excellent feedback loop of magnetic repulsion would naturally exist if the storm touched Who removed metal (steel, copper).

Are desktop PCs cheaper than laptops?

Yes, desktop PCs are cheaper than laptops.
