How To Find The Best Laptops For BTech Students: A Buying Guide

Since tons of options are available in the market, finding the best laptops for BTech students is confusing. At first, you may end up with a computer with average hardware at the best price or might be overpriced with a unique combination of hardware.

Whatever option you go for, it is essential to know the latest technology to decide before spending your money.

If you are looking forward to buying a good quality laptop for yourself or someone close to you who studies engineering or science subjects, this buying guide will surely help you out. We have made sure to provide all the relevant information.

CPU

The CPU performs the primary task of fetching data from memory, performing mathematical operations and controlling other components in a computer. It is usually measured in gigahertz (GHz).

A good laptop for BTech students must have an Intel Core i5 or Core i3 processor, which are 4th generation processors that yield much better performance than earlier Pentium processors. Some laptops come with Celeron processors, but they don’t offer excellent value-for-money.

If you want something affordable and future proof, we suggest you go for laptops with Intel Core i5 or Core i3 processors, even though they may cost a little bit higher than laptops with less powerful processors.

In simple terms, Core i3 and Core i5 processors are pretty good for most applications you would use a computer for, including browsing the internet, programming in various languages, watching high definition videos etc. You can safely go with any of them based on your budget and requirements.

You also have an AMD A8 quad-core processor to choose from, but they run at a higher clock speed compared to any Core i5/i3 processor available right now.

This enables laptops with AMD A8 quad-core CPU’s to be the fastest amongst all laptops that we compared as per some benchmark tests. For those who want an affordable yet fast laptop for BTech students, AMD A8 Quad-Core is the way to go!

You must also keep an eye out for the turbo boost technology that Intel provides, allowing a processor’s core speed to get temporarily boosted up to higher rates under optimal conditions, thus enabling better performance while running resource-intensive software.

Intel turbo boost technology allows Core i5 and Core i3 processors to adjust their speed as per the task assigned.

The only drawback of these processors is that they don’t come with an integrated graphics processor; hence, laptops with AMD A8 Quad Cores CPU’s usually have ‘discrete graphics’ installed in them, which increases the cost of notebooks and slightly reduces the cost of battery life (if not used).

You can buy laptops having ATI Radeon graphics cards if you are looking for a better gaming experience, even for performing some engineering tasks like SimMechanics, STAAD etc.

Similarly-priced laptops having AMD A8 quad-core CPU’s and ATI Radeon graphics cards perform better than any other laptop in the market right now as per benchmark tests we compared them with others.

GPU

If you are looking for buying a laptop for projecting your CAD models, your priority should be to look out for ‘Discrete graphics’. A computer having ‘discrete graphics’ has its video card apart from the processor’s integrated graphic card.

This means that if you are rendering something on your laptop, a dedicated video card will offload some work from the CPU and thereby enabling better performance compared to laptops with an only integrated chipset. Laptops with low end or mid-end Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon graphics can’t run some 3D software effectively.

Hard Drive and Storage

You must also keep an eye out for the storage capacity of the hard disk. If you are not much into videos, it’s advisable to go with a 500 GB 5400 rpm hard drive.

You won’t face any issue if you work on other essential tasks simultaneously while rendering heavy CAD models because core i5/i3 processors have enough power to run multiple software simultaneously.

But if you are rendering videos too, we would recommend getting a laptop with a 1 TB 7200 rpm hard disk so that your videos will get stored in a separate hard disk and will not affect the read-write speed of the core processor.

It is always good to work on two laptops with different configurations because the older one might slow considerably due to an increase in rendering videos.

You will find some laptops having 1 TB 7200 rpm hard disk and 500 GB 5400 rpm hard disk. This means you can install windows on a 500 GB hard drive and store the rest of the data on a 1 TB hard drive. But this configuration is not preferred because 5400 rpm hard disks are slower than 7200 rpm ones.

You can even use the mSATA port available on many laptops for installing an SSD. However, suppose you are looking for better performance. In that case, we recommend buying ‘hybrid’ or ‘dual drive’ laptops having 500 GB HDD + 120/128 GB SSD, which is the best combination for fast performance and large storage capacity.

RAM

Laptops having 4 GB (32 bit OS) and 8 GB (64 bit OS) RAM are the best to go for. Because most of the software available nowadays require 4-8 GB ram.

Many laptops have AMD A8 quad-core CPU’s support ‘dual channel’ memory configuration where two modules (2x 4 GB or 2x 8 GB ) can be installed together, providing better performance than a single 4 GB module. It is advisable to buy laptops with the same RAM modules in dual channel mode, improving overall system responsiveness.

Battery Life

We have tested laptops from various brands. Few of them provided battery backup for 5 hours or more, while others lasted only 1-2 hours even with proper settings configured.

If you are planning to get a laptop exclusively for yourself and know that you won’t charge it frequently, we recommend buying a ‘high capacity 9-cell battery Laptop. The price difference between a regular six-cell battery and a high capacity nine-cell battery is negligible these days.

Nine cell batteries provide better performance compared to 6-cell ones. But keep in mind if your laptop manufacturer offers a 3-year warranty, their authorized service centres might not replace the batteries, which usually cost around $100-$150 because they will see your old battery.

So it is better to go with a high capacity battery considering the same price as the replacement cost for a three-year warranty laptop.

Display Size And Quality

Screens below 15 inches are a terrible choice for engineers.

There is a vast difference in performance between a 1366×768 resolution screen and a 1920×1080 resolution screen of the same size.

Also, notebooks above 2-inch thickness tend to get heated up. So it is advisable to buy laptops having less than 2’’ thickness. However, if you prefer portability over performance, you can go with slightly thicker notebooks with high capacity batteries.

However, if your only priority is performance when working with CAD software or when rendering videos on your laptop, there is no need to buy slim and lightweight laptops (if they come at the cost of battery life). We recommend buying full and higher capacity Notebooks, which provide better performance and improved productivity.

The 13 best laptops for BTech students are all different from one another, so there should be a model on this list that will work just fine for what you have in mind. We hope our article has helped to narrow down your options and find the perfect device!

Frequently Asked Questions

What laptops can be used for gaming?

Laptops that come with an Intel Core-i7 processor and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M graphics card will be able to handle games such as Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt and Battlefield 3 without too much trouble.

What are the best laptop colours to choose from?

The best laptop colours to choose from are metallic, matte, glossy. Metallic has a lustrous sheen which can complement lighter or steely toned outfits.

Glossy laptop cases are slick and provide the latest look for laptops. Matte properties offer an excellent tactile experience along with sophisticated looks; this option is perfect for those who are looking for durability/easy-to-clean material that complements outfits of all styles.

How much storage should I buy on my new laptop?

The answer to this is mainly dependent on what you’re going to be using your laptop for. Suppose you plan on storing large amounts of data, such as downloaded movies or pictures, then the more storage space, the better. For others, 500GB of space should suffice enough.

What is a good budget laptop for BTech students to use in school and everyday life?

To put it simply, you can’t afford to have a laptop. If you are at least considering majoring in Computer Science one day, right now is the time to focus on saving up for your first (and hopefully last) laptop purchase. I’m often asked what budget laptops are best for BTech students-but.

This question is tricky because sometimes, the cheapest models on the market fall below even low expectations. A safer way to approach this question may be what type of computer do your offspring need? Suppose they’re enrolled in classes like Algorithms and Data Structures or Software Engineering.

In that case, their needs will undoubtedly differ from those of someone who’s more focused on taking some coursework each semester but doesn’t want to pursue a college degree professionally!

Should you go with Windows or Mac OS X when buying your new laptop?

Mac OS X is the perfect option for saving money and doesn’t demand a lot from their machine. On the other hand, Windows is better if you’re willing to spend more and tend to use your laptop for advanced programs like Photoshop or video editing.

Which laptop brand is suitable for engineering students?

This is a question we can’t answer!

We’ll need more information about what you’re using the laptop for engineering or other programs? We recommend snagging an Apple MacBook Air if it’s engineering – they’re much better for engineering than PCs.

The operating system and design are highly efficient and perfect for those who require reliable equipment to stay on top of their demanding field. They also have excellent customer service should you run into any trouble with your machine during your coursework.

Do we need a laptop for BTech?

What do you mean by “need”? In my opinion, they’re a bit overkill for most people in college. I find that I can get by without one since most classes these days are online.

Where laptops come in handy is if you have classes with a lot of lab time, where they require complex software to work on different types of formulas and simulations. But again, it’s not necessary given the prevalence of Google Docs and online textbooks nowadays – but it would make your life much easier!

What laptop specs do engineers need?

Engineers usually need a laptop with a powerful CPU and ample RAM, so there is enough “smooth space” to quickly work on complex tasks.

Processor speed, hard drive size, outstanding graphics capabilities, long battery life for more extended periods of use without charging the laptop are all desirable features, along with more memory.
